Overview
Robben Island lies about 7km off the Cape Town coast and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that held Nelson Mandela for 18 of his 27 years in prison. Former political prisoners lead the tours, guiding visitors through Mandela's cell, the lime quarry, and the prison facilities while sharing firsthand stories of apartheid and the struggle for freedom. Standing in Mandela's cell and imagining the time he spent there is a deeply moving experience.
