Overview
An Atlantic beach about 11km west of Sintra, the village's name (Apple Beach) supposedly came from apples that once floated down the river. A wide sandy beach and natural rock pools make it inviting, and powerful Atlantic waves draw surfers and bodyboarders. Beachfront cafes and seafood restaurants serve fresh fish and Vinho Verde, and a 1930s vintage casino adds a nostalgic note. The 45-minute journey on the vintage 'Elétrico de Sintra' tram from Sintra station, winding through woods and villages, is an experience in itself. Free entry. About 30-45 minutes from Sintra station by tram or Bus 441.
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours (facilities operate in summer)
Travel Tips
The vintage tram (April-October only) makes the journey more atmospheric. The natural pools are safest at low tide.
