Overview
In the heart of Sintra town, this medieval summer palace served Portugal's royals for some 500 years from the 14th to 19th centuries. Its emblematic twin conical chimneys, 33m tall, are visible from across the village. The interior blends Manueline and Mudéjar styles with arabesque azulejo tiles and intricate Moorish ceilings - highlights include the Magpie Hall (with 27 magpies painted on the ceiling, linked to King João I), Swan Hall, and Stag Hall. The vast kitchen chimneys were big enough to roast a whole deer at once. Admission about EUR 13. 7-minute walk from Sintra station.
