Overview
Batu Ferringhi is Penang's main beach resort area, a 3 km strip of white-sand beach along the island's north coast offering a relaxed counterpoint to George Town's food and culture. Four- and five-star resorts including Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Golden Sands, and Hard Rock Hotel line the shore, with water sports like parasailing, jet-ski, banana boats, and wave runners available. Every evening 19:00-24:00, the 2 km Batu Ferringhi Night Market opens along the coastal road, offering knockoff goods, clothing, sarongs, and Penang souvenirs (bargaining welcomed). The sand is great but the water is a bit murky — pairing George Town heritage exploration with one night at a Batu Ferringhi resort is the best-value plan. Free (beach). About 30-40 minutes by Grab from George Town.
Opening Hours
Beach 24 hours (night market 19:00-24:00)
Travel Tips
Beach walks and night-market shopping are the main draw, not swimming. Jellyfish may appear in the May-October monsoon season. The night market peaks after 19:00; bargain to 40-60% of the asking price.
