Overview
The Old Fort prison built in 1892 was a notorious facility that held political prisoners — including Mandela and Gandhi — and ordinary citizens during apartheid. After democratisation, it was reborn as home to South Africa's Constitutional Court, symbolising the transition from oppression to freedom. Three prison buildings (Number Four, the Women's Gaol, and the Old Fort) are preserved, and the court itself, constructed partly from recycled prison bricks, is architecturally striking. Guided tours share inmates' stories and the history of South African democracy. Admission ZAR 100 (about KRW 7,400). 10-minute walk from Braamfontein.
