Overview
Founded in 1753 as the world's first national public museum, the British Museum holds about 8 million objects spanning two million years of human civilization. The Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon Marbles, and the Egyptian mummy collection are among the headline pieces. Norman Foster's glass-roofed Great Court is a modern architectural landmark, and a major bonus is free admission. Everything except special exhibitions can be enjoyed at no cost. Free permanent collection (special exhibitions extra). 5-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road tube (Central/Northern lines).
