Overview
Completed in 1965, Masjid Negara is Malaysia's National Mosque and one of Southeast Asia's iconic Islamic monuments, with capacity for around 15,000 worshippers. Its most striking feature is the 18-pointed star-shaped concrete roof — its 13 outer points symbolize Malaysia's 13 states and the inner 5 points the Five Pillars of Islam. The slim 73 m minaret resembles an unfolded umbrella, and the vast surrounding fountain gardens blend modernism with Islamic tradition. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times, and free robes (for women) and headscarves are provided to tour the interior. Pair the visit with nearby KL Bird Park, the Islamic Arts Museum, or Perdana Botanical Gardens. Free admission. About a 10-minute walk from MRT KL Sentral.
