Overview
Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka) is the historic site where the Union Jack was lowered and Malaysia's flag first raised at midnight on August 31, 1957, marking independence. A 95 m free-standing flagpole — once the world's tallest — towers over the square. Surrounding it, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, built in 1897 during British colonial rule, is the most beautiful Moorish and Islamic-style red-brick structure in KL — once the government secretariat, now housing the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia. The KL City Gallery (with the famous I♥KL sign) and Textile Museum are nearby, and each August 31 (Merdeka Day) the square hosts massive military parades and celebrations. Free entry. A 5-minute walk from MRT Masjid Jamek.
