Merdeka Square (Independence Square)

City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Overview

Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka) is the historic site where the Union Jack was lowered and Malaysia's flag first raised at midnight on August 31, 1957, marking independence. A 95 m free-standing flagpole — once the world's tallest — towers over the square. Surrounding it, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, built in 1897 during British colonial rule, is the most beautiful Moorish and Islamic-style red-brick structure in KL — once the government secretariat, now housing the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia. The KL City Gallery (with the famous I♥KL sign) and Textile Museum are nearby, and each August 31 (Merdeka Day) the square hosts massive military parades and celebrations. Free entry. A 5-minute walk from MRT Masjid Jamek.

Opening Hours

24 hours (square)

Travel Tips

Snap the I♥KL sign photo in front of KL City Gallery. Sultan Abdul Samad Building is even more beautiful when illuminated at night — sunset visits are recommended. Merdeka Day on August 31 is the liveliest time.
