Chinatown Petaling Street

Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur

Overview

Petaling Street (Jalan Petaling) is the main thoroughfare of KL's Chinatown and the heart of a Chinese immigrant community formed during the late-19th-century tin-mining boom. A green roof covers the 200 m stretch, and hundreds of stalls flank both sides selling knockoff luxury goods, clothing, watches, souvenirs, and street food. Bargaining is essential — aim for 30-50% of the asking price. The Chinatown gates at either end, the 1888 Guan Ti Temple, and the 1873 Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (KL's oldest Hindu temple) are also worth visiting. Hawker stalls serve KL specialties like Hokkien Mee and Ice Kacang. Free entry. A 5-minute walk from MRT Pasar Seni Station.

Opening Hours

Daily 10:00-22:00 (most lively in the evening)

Travel Tips

Bargaining is essential (start at 30-50% of the asking price). Knockoff luxury goods can cause customs issues — be cautious. The 18:00-22:00 evening hours are liveliest; for authentic crafts, head to nearby Central Market.
