Overview
Datai Bay (Teluk Datai) is a smaller but ultra-luxurious 800 m beach on Langkawi's northwest coast — named one of National Geographic's 'Top 10 Beaches in the World.' Behind the beach rises the 10-million-year-old virgin tropical rainforest of the Machinchang range. Access requires being a guest at one of the two 5-star resorts here — The Datai Langkawi or The Andaman, a Luxury Collection — or purchasing a luxury day pass (about MYR 250-400 including meals and pool), which keeps the beach naturally uncrowded. Beyond the white sand and turquoise water, the bay neighbors a marine reserve and occasionally welcomes endangered dugongs (the inspiration for mermaid legends). Adjacent is the Datai Langkawi-operated Nature Centre — a small natural history museum showing pre-Ice Age flora — and a zipline for jungle adventures. About 50 minutes by car from Kuah Town or 40 minutes from the airport.
Travel Tips
The day pass is pricey but includes a luxury natural beach with lunch and pool access — surprisingly good value. Pair Datai Bay with the nearby Telaga Tujuh (Seven Wells) Waterfall hike.
