Overview
Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) is a plaza at the Kuah Town waterfront — Langkawi's capital, ferry hub, and duty-free shopping center — anchored by a towering 12 m reddish-brown eagle statue that has become the island's iconic landmark. Erected in 1996 under Prime Minister Mahathir, the statue draws on the etymology of 'Langkawi' itself: 'Lang' (eagle) plus 'Kawi' (reddish-brown) in Malay, depicting a reddish-brown eagle in mid-takeoff. Behind the square sit the Andaman Sea and Kuah Ferry Terminal, lively during ferry arrivals and departures. At sunset, the statue silhouetted against the golden sea creates a postcard-perfect image. Jalan Penansa along the waterfront lines up duty-free liquor shops, chocolate stores, and seafood restaurants, making it easy to combine the photo stop with shopping and dinner. Free entry. In central Kuah Town.
Opening Hours
24 hours (waterfront shops 10:00-22:00)
Travel Tips
Best as a quick stop before or after the ferry. Sunset (18:30-19:30) is best for photos. Pick up Toblerone chocolate (about MYR 5-10) and duty-free wine at the waterfront shops.
