The village itself is walkable. Prepaid SIMs are available in Denizli (Turkcell, etc., about TRY 200). Small shops need cash. Tipping 5-10% at restaurants is standard.

Travertine Terraces

Over thousands of years, calcium carbonate deposits created these gleaming white limestone terraces, spanning about 160m in height across 17 tiers. Thermal water around 36C flows down the tiers, producing an otherworldly landscape. Visitors can walk barefoot and soak their feet in the warm pools (shoes are prohibited on the terraces), and the sight of the white tiers turning golden at sunset is especially magical. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it shares a combined admission of about TRY 200 (about EUR 6) with the Hierapolis ruins. 10-minute walk from Pamukkale village.

Hierapolis Ancient City

An ancient spa city founded in the 2nd century BC by the Kingdom of Pergamon and greatly expanded under Rome. A 15,000-seat Roman theatre is remarkably well preserved, and the Necropolis (City of the Dead), lined with sarcophagi, is the largest in Anatolia. The Martyrium of St. Philip and early Christian ruins are also present, as the site is believed to be where the Apostle Philip was martyred. Ancient visitors flocked here for the healing powers of the thermal springs. Included in the combined admission with the travertine terraces (about TRY 200). Reachable on foot from the top of the terraces.

A natural thermal pool inside the Hierapolis site, legendarily named after Cleopatra who is said to have bathed here. The carbonated thermal water sits at about 36C, and submerged ancient Roman columns and marble fragments from an earthquake create the unique experience of swimming among 2,000-year-old ruins. The mineral-rich water is believed to benefit skin and muscles, and the depth of 1-1.5m makes it safe. Separate admission about TRY 130 (about EUR 4). 5-minute walk within Hierapolis.
