Derinkuyu Underground City

Carved into volcanic tuff, this ancient underground city descends eight levels and roughly 85m underground, with capacity for an estimated 20,000 residents. It contained a complete urban infrastructure including churches, schools, a winery, food storage, and a ventilation system. Believed to have been built by Christians fleeing Roman and Arab persecution, it features massive circular stone doors that served as defensive barriers. Göreme Open-Air Museum

The name 'Monks Valley' comes from the legend of 5th-century hermit monk Simeon, who is said to have practised atop one of these pillars — monks' quarters carved into the rock can still be seen.
