Overview
The Askari Monument stands at the intersection of Samora Avenue and Maktaba Street in downtown Dar es Salaam, a bronze soldier figure erected in 1927 to honor East African 'askari' soldiers who fought on the British side during World War I in the African theater. Sculpted by British artist James Alexander Stevenson, the figure carries a rifle in one hand and a bayonet in the other. It's the centerpiece of Dar es Salaam's colonial-era city plan, surrounded by other heritage buildings such as the old post office and colonial clubs. Free to view. Downtown.
