Overview
Bongoyo Island is an uninhabited coral island about 30 minutes by boat off Dar es Salaam's northern coast, part of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve. White-sand beaches meet clear turquoise water, and nearby coral reefs make snorkeling a treat for spotting tropical fish and sea turtles. A few small grill stalls on the island serve freshly cooked lobster, prawns, and octopus with fresh coconut water - that beach lunch is the highlight. Overnight camping is possible, and weekdays often feel like having the island to yourself. Boat plus park fee about TZS 30,000. Boats depart from the Slipway or Msasani.
Opening Hours
Boats run 09:00-16:00
Travel Tips
Regular boats run from Slipway Shopping Centre (departures at 09:30, 11:30, 13:30). Don't miss the last return (16:00). Rent snorkel gear at the Slipway or local shops.
