Overview
Located in central Dar es Salaam, Kariakoo is East Africa's largest traditional market, with thousands of stalls packed into a multi-story building and the surrounding alleys. Tropical fruits, seafood, spices, fabrics, electronics - virtually everything is for sale, and it is the closest you can get to the bustling daily lives of Tanzanians. The market's name is derived from the British 'Carrier Corps' of World War I, and it serves as the commercial heart of the city.
Opening Hours
Daily 06:00-18:00 (some shops closed on Sundays)
Travel Tips
Leave valuables at the hotel and carry only minimal cash. Be discreet with photos, and going with a local guide makes the visit both safer and more rewarding. Mornings show the market at its liveliest.
