Baths of Caracalla

Celio, Rome

Overview

Completed between AD 212 and 216 under Emperor Caracalla, this was the second-largest public bath complex in the Roman Empire, accommodating around 1,600 bathers at once. It combined cold, warm and hot bathing halls with a library, gymnasium and gardens, all decorated with elaborate mosaics and marble. Only towering walls and columns remain today, but the sheer scale still conveys the grandeur of Roman engineering, and opera performances are staged among the ruins in summer. Admission about EUR 8. 10-minute walk from Metro Circo Massimo (Line B).
