Overview
Completed in AD 80, the Colosseum is the Roman Empire's great amphitheater, once seating up to 50,000 spectators. It hosted gladiator combats and wild-beast hunts, with animal pens and stage machinery hidden in the hypogeum below. Earthquakes and looting over 2,000 years have damaged parts of the structure, but its scale and beauty - the pinnacle of Roman engineering - still astound. It is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Combined ticket (includes Roman Forum and Palatine Hill) about EUR 18 (online booking recommended). Right outside Metro Colosseo station (Line B).
