Circus Maximus

Circo Massimo, Rome

Overview

Set between the Palatine and Aventine hills, this was ancient Rome's largest chariot-racing stadium, in use from the 6th century BC and able to seat around 150,000 spectators at its peak. Chariot races like those depicted in Ben-Hur were held here, and the roughly 600m oval track outline is still clearly visible in the grass today. Now a grassy public park, it's a favorite spot for Roman joggers and strollers, and occasionally hosts concerts and large events. Free to visit. Directly at Metro Circo Massimo station (Line B).
