Overview
Two linked strolling gardens — an Edo-period front garden and a Meiji rear garden — draw water from the Yoshiki River, true to the name 'garden leaning on water.' The masterstroke is the rear garden's borrowed scenery: Todai-ji's Nandaimon roof, Mount Wakakusa and Kasugayama stack beyond the pond as if part of the design, a textbook of Japanese garden aesthetics. Admission includes the Neiraku Museum's ancient Chinese bronzes and Korean ceramics, and a teahouse serves matcha in the grounds. Steps from Todai-ji's crowds, it is astonishingly quiet.
