Nigatsu-do
Attraction

Nigatsu-do

Zoshicho, Nara

Overview

Perched stage-like on the hill east of the Daibutsuden, this hall has hosted the Shuni-e (Omizutori) rite every year without interruption since 752. On the nights of March 1-14, monks race along the balcony rail swinging giant torches, showering sparks — a 1,200-year-old spectacle that announces spring in Nara. The rest of the year the balcony stays open around the clock, free, with locals' favorite sunset view over the city. The stone-stepped Urasando lane up from the Daibutsuden may be Nara's most atmospheric ten-minute walk.

Opening Hours

Balcony open 24 hours; grounds freely accessible

🚇 Getting there

About 10 minutes up the hill east of the Daibutsuden.

⏱️ How long to visit

About 30-45 minutes.

🌅 Best time to visit

Arrive 30 minutes before sunset and wait on the balcony. The March 1-14 night torches are once-in-a-lifetime viewing.

Travel Tips

Climb up at dusk after Todai-ji for the sunset. During Omizutori the March 12 torches are biggest — and most crowded; aim for an early weekday instead.
