Mount Wakakusa

Zoshicho, Nara

Overview

This gentle grass mountain east of Nara Park is also called Mikasayama for its three overlapping ridges. Pay the JPY 150 entry and it's 15-20 minutes to the first ridge, 30-40 to the summit, where the Daibutsuden's roof, Kofuku-ji's pagoda and the whole Nara basin spread below — a huge reward for a small climb. Deer graze partway up the slopes, and on the fourth Saturday night of January the entire mountainside is set alight for the Yamayaki burning festival, with fireworks, the highlight of Nara's winter.
