Overview
Grown over the former precincts of Gango-ji, this merchant quarter strings latticed wooden machiya along narrow lanes, with red migawari-zaru charm monkeys dangling from the eaves. The classic stroll links the free Naramachi Koshi-no-Ie lattice house, the Naramachi Museum and the Mochiidono arcade, while renovated townhouses hide cafes, craft shops and sake bars — a neighborhood best enjoyed without an itinerary, and truer to old Nara life than the main tourist drags.

Streets always open (Koshi-no-Ie 9:00-17:00; most shops roughly 10:00-18:00)
