Overview

Founded in 1394 by King Taejo, the founder of Joseon, Jongmyo is a royal Confucian shrine housing the memorial tablets of Joseon kings and queens - a UNESCO World Heritage Site embodying the essence of Confucian ritual. Comprising the Jeongjeon and Yeongnyeongjeon halls, its restrained, symmetrical wooden architecture is regarded as the world's oldest preserved royal ancestral shrine complex. The annual Jongmyo Jerye ritual and its accompanying music in May are also inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Admission KRW 1,000 (some days require a guided tour). A 5-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station (Line 3).
