Overview
Dam Square takes its name from the 13th-century dam on the Amstel River and is Amsterdam's historical and geographical center. On the west side stands the Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis), completed in 1655 as a city hall and later converted to a royal palace during the reign of Louis Napoleon. Built on 13,659 wooden piles, it features marble halls and lavish Rembrandt-era decoration. The National Monument on the east side commemorates WWII victims. Royal Palace admission about EUR 12.50. About 10 minutes on foot from Amsterdam Centraal.
