Overview
Built in 1299 under King Haakon V, this medieval fortress stands strategically above the Oslofjord. In its 700-year history, it has never fallen to enemy attack, and Christian IV rebuilt it as a Renaissance castle in the 17th century. Fortress grounds are free and open 24 hours, with the Royal Mausoleum, Norwegian Resistance Museum (WWII), and Norwegian Armed Forces Museum inside. A daily changing of the guard takes place at 1:30 PM. Grounds free, castle admission about NOK 100. 10-minute walk from Oslo Central Station.
