Overview
Mount Victoria Lookout, at 196m, offers a full 360-degree panorama of Wellington's city center, waterfront, harbor, airport, and on clear days the Kaikoura Ranges of the South Island. You can drive to the summit or hike from Oriental Bay (about 30 minutes). The hill was a filming location for 'The Lord of the Rings,' where the hobbits hide from the Nazgul. Sunsets on clear days are particularly beautiful. Free entry. About 10 minutes by car or 30 minutes on foot from downtown.
