Overview
Operating since 1902, the Wellington Cable Car is a historic transit line running about 612 m from Lambton Quay in the downtown to the Kelburn hilltop. The bright red carriage climbs the steep grade as views of Wellington Harbour and the city unfold below. At the top you'll find the Kelburn lookout, the Carter Observatory, and the Wellington Botanic Garden. The Cable Car Museum showcases 120 years of operating history and vintage carriages, and walking back down through the gardens is a great way to return.
Travel Tips
Walk back down through the Botanic Garden for plant displays and city views. The Carter Observatory's evening stargazing programs are also worth booking.
