Overview
Built in the late 17th century, this octagonal granite fortress sits on a hill south of Gothenburg. Designed to defend the city, it was never used in actual battle — a peaceful fortress. Massive granite walls and a giant gilded crown ornament define its silhouette, and the grounds offer 360-degree views of Gothenburg's center, harbor, and river. The interior occasionally hosts museums and events, while the grounds are free and open 24 hours, popular for walks and picnics. 15-minute walk from Haga district.
Opening Hours
Grounds: 24 hours; interior: varies with events.
Travel Tips
Grounds are free and a top sunset spot. The uphill walk from Haga is steep — wear comfortable shoes.
