Overview
Built under Emperor Justinian in 532, this underground cistern is supported by 336 marble columns across 9,800 square metres. Once holding up to 80,000 tonnes of water, most columns were salvaged from earlier Roman buildings. The star attractions are two Medusa-head column bases at the western end — one placed sideways, one upside-down — creating an aura of mystery. After a major 2022 restoration, the lighting and sound design are even more impressive. Admission about TRY 450 (about EUR 13). 1-minute walk from Hagia Sophia.
