Overview
Stretching about 1.4km from Taksim Square to Tünel, İstiklal Avenue is Istanbul's busiest pedestrian street, with roughly 3 million people passing through daily. Art Nouveau and Neoclassical buildings from the 19th-century Ottoman era line both sides, housing independent bookshops, record stores, Turkish designer boutiques, and historic cinemas and theatres. A red retro tram runs down the middle, and the back alleys — especially Çiçek Pasajı (Flower Passage) and Nevizade Street — are packed with traditional meyhanes (Turkish taverns). Free to stroll. Take Metro M2 to Taksim station.
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours (shops generally 10:00-22:00)
Travel Tips
Try rakı (anise-flavoured spirit) and meze (appetisers) in Çiçek Pasajı or Nevizade Street. Weekend evenings are extremely crowded.
