Overview
Construction began in 1461 under Mehmed II, making this the world's largest covered market with 61 alleys and over 4,000 shops. Gold and silver jewelry, handwoven carpets, leather goods, Turkish lamps, spices and more fill the stalls, and bargaining is half the fun. With 250,000 to 400,000 visitors daily, it is a must-see in Istanbul, where getting lost in the maze of corridors is part of the experience. Sipping Turkish tea (cay) while chatting with vendors is the real charm. Free entry. 1-minute walk from Tram T1 Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı stop.
