Gifted by France in 1886 to mark the centennial of American independence, the Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The 93m statue is a symbol of freedom and democracy and the historic landmark that millions of immigrants first saw upon arriving in America. Interior staircases lead up to the crown observation deck, where panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and harbor are spectacular. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it draws more than 4 million visitors a year and is one of America's premier attractions.
