Speicherstadt (Warehouse District)

Speicherstadt, Hamburg

Overview

Built in the late 19th century, the world's largest brick warehouse complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. Gothic-style red-brick buildings lining the canals create Hamburg's most photogenic scene. Today the warehouses house Miniatur Wunderland, the Hamburg Dungeon, a coffee museum, a spice museum, and more. The canal reflections under night lighting are especially magical. Free to walk around. 5-minute walk from U-Bahn Meßberg (Line 1) or Überseequartier (Line 4).

💰 Tickets

FREE — the UNESCO-listed warehouse district itself can be explored freely at any time. The Speicherstadtmuseum inside charges about €5.5 adult, €2.5 pupils, free under 6 (as of 2026).

Opening Hours

The district is open 24/7. The Speicherstadtmuseum opens Mar–Oct Mon–Fri 10:00–17:00 and weekends 10:00–18:00; Nov–Feb daily 10:00–17:00.

🚇 Getting there

About a 5-minute walk from U-Bahn U3 Baumwall (Elbphilharmonie) or U1 Meßberg station; U4 Überseequartier also works. The museum is at Am Sandtorkai 36.

⏱️ How long to visit

Allow 1–2 hours to stroll the district, plus about 45–60 minutes if you add the museum.

🌅 Best time to visit

Dusk to evening is the highlight, when the illuminated red-brick warehouses reflect in the canals — Poggenmühlen-Brücke is the classic night-photo spot. For daytime visits, early morning is quietest.

Travel Tips

For the best nighttime reflection photos, head to Poggenmühlenbrücke. Book Miniatur Wunderland online in advance — it sells out.
