Overview
Founded in 962 AD, Tirta Empul is one of Bali's most important water temples, built around a sacred spring. Visitors can participate in the Balinese Hindu purification ritual (melukat) at pools fed by 30 purification fountains, making it a unique experience for travelers worldwide. The sacred pond, where crystal-clear spring water has risen continuously for over a millennium, has been a place of prayer for devotees. Admission IDR 50,000 (sarong rental free). About 30 minutes by taxi from Ubud.

🚇 Getting there
There is no public transit; the temple is in Tampaksiring village, about 30-40 minutes by car or scooter from Ubud. Most visitors use Gojek/Grab or a hired driver.
⏱️ How long to visit
About 1 hour for the temple grounds, or 1.5-2 hours if you take part in the melukat purification bath.
🌅 Best time to visit
08:00-10:00, before tour buses arrive, is quietest; late afternoon is also calm. For the purification ritual, go early morning when the water is clearest and queues are short.
