Overview
Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the best-preserved of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, with 15th-18th century Malla dynasty architecture largely intact. The 55-Window Palace with its intricate woodcarvings, the five-story Nyatapola Temple (Nepal's tallest), and Pottery Square where artisans still shape clay by hand are highlights. Less commercialized than Kathmandu, it offers a deeper taste of medieval Nepal. Don't miss 'juju dhau' (king yogurt), a famous local specialty. Admission NPR 1,500 (foreigners). About 40 minutes by bus from Kathmandu.
