Overview
Patan Durbar Square, in Lalitpur (Patan) south of Kathmandu, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most artistically rich of the valley's three Durbar Squares. Highlights include the intricately carved stone Krishna Temple, the Mahavihar Buddhist monastery, and the Patan Museum inside the old royal palace with its celebrated bronze collection. The Newar metalworking tradition lives on, and artisans can often be seen at work near the square. It attracts fewer tourists than Kathmandu's Durbar Square, offering a more relaxed experience. Admission NPR 1,000 (foreigners). About 25 minutes by taxi from Thamel.
