Overview
Mount Eden (Maungawhau in Maori) is Auckland's highest volcanic peak at 196m, offering a 360-degree panorama of the city, Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto Island, and One Tree Hill. The volcano last erupted about 28,000 years ago, leaving a 50m-wide crater preserved like a deep bowl. Sacred to Maori, entry into the crater is prohibited. Sunrise and sunset visits reward with golden light flooding the cityscape. Free entry. About 15 minutes by bus from the city center.

Travel Tips
A sunrise visit means fewer crowds and golden light. The walk to the summit takes about 10 minutes — easy for all fitness levels. Do not enter the crater, which is sacred to Maori.
