Overview
Rangitoto is a 600-year-old volcanic island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, reached by ferry in about 25 minutes. A roughly one-hour hike leads to the 260 m summit, where the crater rim opens onto a stunning 360-degree view of the Auckland skyline and the gulf. The island also has the world's largest pohutukawa forest (the 'New Zealand Christmas tree') and lava caves. Since it remains undeveloped, bring your own water and snacks.
