Lima Historic Centre

Centro Histórico, Lima

Overview

A UNESCO World Heritage Site at the heart of Peru's capital, the Lima Historic Centre preserves the original city founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. Plaza de Armas (Plaza Mayor) is surrounded by Lima Cathedral, the San Francisco Monastery (famous for its catacombs), and the Government Palace. Striking Baroque and Mudéjar buildings evoke colonial-era splendor. At noon, you can watch the changing of the guard at the Government Palace.

Opening Hours

Plaza open 24 hours / Cathedral: Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat 10:00-13:00

Travel Tips

The catacombs beneath the San Francisco Monastery can only be visited via guided tour. The noon changing of the guard is free to watch, and pairs well with a walk through Chinatown.
