Overview
The San Francisco Monastery, completed in 1674, is a landmark Baroque building in Lima's historic center and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its most famous feature is the underground catacombs, where approximately 70,000 sets of remains are arranged in geometric patterns — eerie yet awe-inspiring. Inside the monastery, Seville-tiled courtyards, a valuable collection of religious art, and a library of 25,000 antique books (one of South America's first) await. Admission PEN 15 (guided tour included). 2-minute walk from Plaza de Armas.
Opening Hours
Daily 09:00-20:15 (guided tours depart regularly)
Travel Tips
Catacomb tours require a guide and last about 30 minutes. Be aware of tight spaces if you're claustrophobic. Don't miss the antique book collection in the library.
