Westerplatte Memorial

Westerplatte, Gdańsk

Overview

At dawn on 1 September 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein shelled the Polish military outpost here, marking the start of World War II. The 182 Polish defenders held out heroically for seven days against overwhelming German forces, and their stand became a symbol of Polish courage. A 25m memorial stands on the site, and the ruined barracks and guardhouses remain as tangible reminders of history. Free entry. Reachable from the Old Town by ferry (about 40 minutes) or bus 106.

Opening Hours

Open 24 hours (outdoor memorial)
