Overview
Over 85% of Warsaw's Old Town was destroyed in WWII, but citizens painstakingly rebuilt it to its 18th-century form. That extraordinary reconstruction earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1980. Major sights include Sigismund's Column, the Royal Castle, and the Mermaid statue on the Old Market Square, all set among colourful façades lined with cafés and restaurants. The story of destruction and rebirth gives every visit a moving dimension.
