Overview
Built between 1515 and 1521 on the banks of the Tagus, Belém Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolising Portugal's Age of Discovery glory. Its ornate Manueline (Portuguese Gothic) stonework features carved ropes, crosses, and armillary spheres — motifs of maritime exploration. Originally set midstream, it shifted closer to shore after the 1755 earthquake. Along with the Monument to the Discoveries and Jerónimos Monastery, it anchors Belém's must-see trio. Admission about EUR 10 (free Sundays until 14:00). 5-minute walk from Tram 15E or Bus 728 Belém stop.
Opening Hours
