Overview
Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake on the site of Lisbon's destroyed royal palace, this is the city's grandest square - three sides framed by yellow arcaded buildings and the fourth opening directly onto the Tagus. At its center stands the equestrian statue of King José I (18th century), and on the northern edge the triumphal Rua Augusta Arch opens to the shopping streets above, with a rooftop viewpoint. The riverside steps (Cais das Colunas) offer postcard views of the Tagus, the 25 de Abril Bridge, and the Cristo Rei statue. Free entry. Right at Metro Terreiro do Paço (Blue Line).
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours (arch viewpoint 09:00-19:00)
Travel Tips
Climb the Rua Augusta Arch (about EUR 4) for a complete view of the square and river. The riverside steps are magical at sunset.
