Overview

Carved into volcanic tuff, this ancient underground city descends eight levels and roughly 85m underground, with capacity for an estimated 20,000 residents. It contained a complete urban infrastructure including churches, schools, a winery, food storage, and a ventilation system. Believed to have been built by Christians fleeing Roman and Arab persecution, it features massive circular stone doors that served as defensive barriers. It is the largest and deepest of more than 36 underground cities across Cappadocia. Admission about TRY 150 (about EUR 4.50). About 30 minutes by bus from Göreme.
