Overview
A UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some 30 rock-cut cave churches and monasteries carved by Byzantine monks between the 10th and 12th centuries. Each cave — the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise), the Snake Church, the Apple Church, and more — preserves remarkably vivid Byzantine frescoes up to a thousand years old. The Dark Church's colours are especially stunning, preserved by centuries of darkness, and requires a separate ticket but is absolutely worth it. A unique fusion of nature and religious art. Admission about TRY 200 (about EUR 6; Dark Church an additional TRY 100). 15-minute walk from central Göreme.
Opening Hours
08:00-19:00 (November to March 08:00-17:00)
Travel Tips
The Dark Church charges a separate fee but contains the best-preserved frescoes — don't skip it. Photography is prohibited inside the churches.
