Overview
CASEM (the Santa Elena and Monteverde Women's Artisan Cooperative) began in 1982 when eight women started a side venture as the region's dairy-dependent economy faltered. Today around 100 members create embroidery, woodwork, ceramics, and jewelry themed around local icons like the quetzal and golden toad. The building, raised by community effort in 1987, houses a shop, gallery, and workshop where you can watch artisans at work. Purchases directly support the members' livelihoods and the local economy.
