Overview
One of the castle's most iconic structures, this three-tiered stone bridge spans a deep ravine (originally a moat, artificially deepened in the Middle Ages) to connect the castle with its gardens. Starting as a 15th-century wooden footbridge, it was rebuilt and expanded across the 17th-18th centuries (1686, 1707, 1748, 1765) into its current Baroque form, and at completion was the tallest stone bridge in the Czech Republic. Its railings display replica Baroque statues of saints including St. Anthony and St. John of Nepomuk (originals kept in the castle lapidary); the lower passage links the Masquerade Hall with the castle theatre, while the upper passage connects the picture gallery with the castle gardens. The panoramic view of red rooftops and the Vltava from the bridge is one of the best in town. Free to visit (part of the castle courtyard route). 10-minute walk from the Old Town square.
