Overview
Founded in 1971 when activists occupied an abandoned military base, Christiania is a self-governing community of around 900 residents who live by their own rules. It's a one-of-a-kind enclave of graffiti art, eco-architecture, organic restaurants, and live music venues, with the main street lined with handmade crafts and organic food. Controversial within Denmark, it nonetheless attracts global interest as a laboratory for alternative living.
